According to someone attending the hearing, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) just blasted U.S. policy on Iran in Senate hearings, calling for more dialog regardless of Iranian nuclear activities and saying that the U.S. demands that Iran abide by its international commitments are “insulting” and justify our image as “ugly Americans.”
Ironically, Specter’s comments come the same day that U.S. officials will discuss Syria and North Korea’s proliferation cooperation. Specter has taken 16 tax-payer funded trips to Syria to engage the Assad’s and has called his record of moderating Assad through dialog a success. Specter also declared his 1990 engagement with Saddam Hussein a success and used his belief in Saddam’s sincerity to argue against John McCain (R-AZ)’s call for an arms embargo against Iraq in the run-up to Saddam’s invasion of Kuwait.
If ever the Republicans had a Jimmy Carter, Arlen Specter is it.
