Armey on Christie’s Decision: ‘Debilitating Stupidity’

Former House majority leader Dick Armey blasted Chris Christie’s decision to hold a special election this October for New Jersey’s now-open Senate seat.

Armey said this is a further blow to Christie’s standing within the Republican party, because he could have put the election off until 2014, and appointed a Republican to serve until then. “This is what really rankles conservatives,” Armey said on CNN this afternoon. “I put it down as debilitating stupidity because the first rule of politics is ‘don’t lose the friends you already have for the friends you’re never going to get.’”

He said that a Democratic governor would have never made the same decision, and said the “political calculation” was “dimwitted.”

“If he thinks the Democrats are going to love him for being the guy who plays fair rather than takes the political opportunity, that’s crazy,” Armey said. ”Democrats hate Republicans, Democrats aren’t going to vote for Republicans.”
