Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says he plans to sign a heartbeat law to protect unborn children in his state from the ravages of abortion. Good for him. This move isn’t necessarily a politically savvy one. It will probably help him in the 2024 GOP presidential primary race, yet it could hurt his chances in a hypothetical general election matchup against President Biden. The pro-life cause took some significant losses in the midterms. But sometimes crass political calculations must take a back seat to preserve the most vulnerable among us.
