(CNN) – At least 12 people were shot at a Tucson grocery store on Saturday, and U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was among them, a Democratic party source told CNN.
Giffords, 40, was holding a constituent meeting at the grocery store when the shooting occurred, according to a schedule posted on her website.
CNN could not confirm conditions for Giffords or any of the others wounded, but the Tuscon Citizen newspaper was reporting that Giffords was shot in the head.
The Democratic source described the situation as “pretty serious.”
Oh my goodness. There are many prayers here for Representative Giffords and her family, and everyone injured in and affected by this horrific attack.
More from ABC:
Giffords, a Democrat, was holding a “Congress on Your Corner” event today at a Safeway supermarket in northwest Tucson.
An eyewitness told ABC News he heard 15 to 20 gunshots and saw lots of people running and screaming that the Congresswoman had been shot.
Jason Pekau, an employee at a nearby Sprint store, also said two bodies were covered on the sidewalk after emergency responders had arrived at the scene.
A Democratic member of Congress who asked not to be identified confirmed one of the dead was a Giffords staffer. [Emphasis mine.]
Giffords, 40, is married to astronaut Mark Kelly, commander of STS 134, the last scheduled space shuttle mission which is supposed to launch in April.
Various networks are reporting that she has died. But there are many conflicting reports.
UPDATE: Many networks gratefully doing mea culpas, reporting she is surgery.
UPDATE: Live local news coverage.
UPDATE: The Speaker’s statement:
“I am horrified by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and members of her staff. An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve. Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families. This is a sad day for our country.”
UPDATE: Sarah Palin posts on Facebook:
My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today’s tragic shooting in Arizona.
On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.
– Sarah Palin
UPDATE: From Eric Cantor:
“I was deeply horrified to learn today of the shooting of Representative Gabrielle Giffords and others in Tucson. Our thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords and her family, her staff, and the residents of Tucson on this sad day. As this serious situation continues to develop, I remain in close communication with leaders of both parties, the Speaker’s office and the Sergeant at Arms. We will remain in constant communication regarding any schedule changes.”
UPDATE: As I read Twitter, a wise caution from Elizabeth Scalia.
UPDATE: Various networks reporting that the congresswoman’s surgery was successful. Oremus.
UPDATE: The director of homeland security issues a statement:
“I am deeply saddened by reports that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Chief Judge John Roll and others were attacked today in Tucson, Arizona. There is no place in our society or discourse for such senseless and unconscionable acts of violence. Gabby is a steadfast representative for southern Arizona and both she and John are dedicated public servants.
The Department of Homeland Security has offered all possible assistance to the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, who are leading the investigation. My thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her family and staff, and all those who were injured in this difficult time.”
UPDATE: A city official is telling MSNBC doctors expect Rep. Giffords to “pull through.”
UPDATE (4:00): Doctor, at live press conference, reports he is “very optimistic” about her recovery. But a child died in the attack, he confirms. R.I.P.
