The adviser behind Barack Obama’s defeat of Hillary Clinton in 2008, David Axelrod, says Clinton’s prospective presidential candidacy still lacks ideological passion, comparing her unfavorably to Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren.
Axelrod’s comments add fuel to a simmering feud between more establishment Democrats, who’ve lined up behind Hillary, and the more liberal wing of the party, which has been pushing for Warren to mount a 2016 bid. Warren’s recent attempt to derail a government funding bill over financial regulation has some thinking she’s considering a presidential campaign, but Axelrod doesn’t think so: The senator is seeking to “influence how Hillary frames her candidacy, and the issues she focuses on,” he said.
“I think Elizabeth is very sincere about her concerns about what’s happening in the American economy,” Axelrod said, “and Hillary hasn’t yet said what her program will be, what she’s running on.”
“What happened in 2008 was that Hillary’s candidacy got out in front of any rationale for it,” he later said. “And the danger is that’s happening again. You hear ‘Ready for Hillary,’ it’s like, ‘ready for what?’”
