Axelrod: If Romney Was a Good Governor, Why Isn’t He Competing in Massachusetts?

Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod continued to attack Mitt Romney’s record in Massachusetts today.

“He is not even contesting his home state in this election,” Axelrod said of Romney in a conference call with reporters today. “I’m not sure there’s a historical precedent for that. And I think part of the reason is that those who know him best have rendered a judgment on his representation, his self-representation as some sort of economic guru and job creator.”

Romney, Axelrod charged, was focusing on two themes: “a savage and often distorted attack on the president’s economic record” and a “vastly inflated self-promotion as a job creator.”

Asked about the news that former Utah governor Michael Leavitt was heading Romney’s transition team, Axelrod said that the team’s report would “be part of the dustbin of history.”

And while the Bain ad buy, despite all the buzz, was relatively small (less than $100,000, according to one report), Axelrod said that the campaign planned to spend about $10 million airing the new ad attacking Romney’s Massachusetts record in battleground states.
