Axelrod: Obama Made ‘A Mistake’ by Saying His Policies Are on the Ballot in November

Former Obama advisor and speech writer David Axelrod admitted his former boss made “a mistake” during a speech last week when he said his policies were on the ballot this midterm election.

“I am not on the ballot this fall,” President Obama said in a Thursday speech outlining his priorities for his last two years in office. “But make no mistake: these policies are on the ballot. Every single one of them.”

Republicans immediately seized upon the chance to use the unpopular president’s comment to their advantage, featuring the sound bite in campaign commercials the very next day.

“I wouldn’t have put that line in there,” Axelrod said on Meet the Press Sunday. “It was obvious when you saw the speech that that was not the way the clip was gonna — it was a mistake.”
