We keep getting wake-up calls about surrogacy.
***Expletive warning.
There’s a disturbing video of a man with a baby on his chest that’s been making the social media rounds. The baby appears to be desperately looking for milk.
The background sound is a man exclaiming: “I’ve only been doing this for two f**king days. Like s***. Give me an f***ing break.”
Beyond the vulgar language, there is this: “POV: You’re hungry but have two dads.”
This Commissioning Father mocks a newborn as he roots to latch and breastfeed.
We think this is supposed to be funny?

The video — which was originally posted to Facebook — comes from a gay couple in Portland, Ore., documenting their new life as “gay dads” through surrogacy. It was highlighted Monday by Stop Surrogacy Now UK on X (where I saw it), where it is still making the rounds.
“As a small account I was surprised the clip garnered as much attention as it did, but perhaps people are finally waking up to what surrogacy actually is,” Lexi Ellingsworth, founder of Stop Surrogacy Now UK, told me early Tuesday.
Ellingsworth added:
A baby wanting to breastfeed is instinctive and feeding cues shouldn’t be turned into a form of entertainment or ridicule. Babies are not accessories and should not be mocked for social media content.
It’s brief, but it’s a painful video to watch. And it’s only made worse by a journey to Michael & Matt’s (the gay couple) Facebook reels to see multiple posts of the same video of the young boy, each put to different audio. One version reads: “He refuses to believe daddy doesn’t make milk.”
No, he doesn’t. His daddies stripped him from having a mother. And evidently that’s something we are supposed to be laughing about.
As with all mocking, there’s a sharp bitterness to the reels. After exploiting a nearly invisible woman (in one social media post, we see one of her legs in stirrups as she’s delivering him), it’s almost as if they are being vindictive toward an innocent newborn.
Theodore — we learn his name from other posts — didn’t ask for any of this.
How long before the boy’s longing for a mother is no longer a laughing matter and instead a critical cultural call to more universal prohibitions on surrogacy? When even the United Nations is seeming to get it — likening surrogate motherhood to slavery — I hope and pray each small social media viral moment as a step in the right direction.
Meanwhile, please pray for this child and all children in similar situations — appearing to be some kind of ideological trophy instead of vulnerable treasures to whom we owe pure love and protection.
I’ll be honest, even after being exposed to the reels yesterday, this morning I heard one of them and cried — somebody ought to be weeping for these children and taking definitive action.
God have mercy on us and protect the most vulnerable children. Give us the courage and grace to confront the evil of surrogacy with a love sensitive to the wounds of men while being fiercely vigilant in addressing the reality that the kids are not alright in these circumstances.
We keep getting wake-up calls about surrogacy. (The young boy fighting for his life who was recently born in Texas despite the customer couple’s request for an abortion. The same-sex couple in Canada currently suing their surrogate for the wrongful birth of the boy they are raising.) When are Americans going to get over our sensitivity to families desiring children, families living in surrogacy situations, to move to safeguard the lives of women and children?
