Michele Bachmann renewed her call for Treasury secretary Tim Geithner to resign while campaigning in Iowa yesterday.
“The president’s refusal to remove Treasury Secretary Geithner shows the president has no plan to restore the triple-A credit rating to the United States of America. The president is not listening to the people of this country, nor is he providing the leadership that is necessary to bring about economic recovery,” Bachmann said, according to ABC News.
“I once again, today, in Polk County, Iowa, renew my call for Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner to resign immediately for the sake of our country and to return our economy to full status,” she added.
President Obama also came under fire during her remarks. Bachmann said Obama had been “missing in action for almost 24 hours” after S & P announced the downgrade.
Mitt Romney is also planning to focus on the downgrade today while campaigning in New Hampshire, stressing that while he was governor of Massachusetts, S & P upgraded the state’s credit rating to AA.
“When I was governor, S & P rewarded Massachusetts with a credit rating upgrade for our sound fiscal management and the underlying strength of our economy,” Romney said in a statement. “That didn’t happen by accident. The President’s failure to put the nation’s fiscal and economic house in order has caused a massive loss of confidence that resulted in an embarrassing downgrade.”
“In the Carter era, it was called ‘malaise.’ Under President Obama, it’s called meltdown,” he added.
