The non-Islamist parties in Tunisia — which lost Sunday’s election to the “moderate” Islamist party — put on a brave face: “Tunisia Liberals See a Vote for Change, Not Religion.” From one of their leaders:

The message to Islamists, he added, was: “ ‘We are for Islam to be the religion of the state, but you must be very cautious. We are not going to give up our fight for civil freedoms.’ I am profoundly convinced that we can promote human rights and women’s rights, etc., without fighting against Islamists.”

Well, here’s hoping. But if I were this guy, I’d make sure my passport was up to date and I had a go-bag ready for when I had to flee to France, like the first president of Islamic Iran.
