Bases

An e-mail from a a private real estate developer and ex-military-base admin guy about one such base in the northeast:

Much of the former base housing has been demolished for good reason – it was in no way fit for human habitation after years (often decades) of neglect and abandonment. The infrastructure that once served this housing is also crumbling and, in many cases, unusable without being totally rebuilt. The housing that was salvageable (primarily former officer’s quarters) has largely been renovated and sold to individual homeowners (who I suspect would be quite unhappy about a mass influx of refugees).

The idea of housing displaced New Orleans residents at former military bases may seem like a good one at first blush, but in the case of Fort Devens (and I suspect many other bases closed years ago) it is just not practical on anything other than a tiny scale.
