I had the good fortune this week of ex-Foleyating myself from Washington. I visited St. Vincent College in Pennsylvania, the first Benedictine college in the country, where I delivered a speech on alternative media and politics. Two things were striking about St. Vincent: The faculty and students there are serious about ideas and scholarship; but they also like to have fun. Too many schools lack the first or have too much or too little of the second. St. Vincent seems to have found a balance of which Aristotle would approve. If Martians visited Washington today they’d think our species nuts. If they visited St. Vincent, they’d think we are both wise and good.
