I have to admit, I didn’t think Evan Bayh’s decision to drop out of the presidential race was going to have an impact on anyone other than Bayh. After all, when Baskin & Robbins runs out of vanilla, there are thirty other–more exciting flavors–to choose from, so no one even notices that vanilla’s gone.
Me: I understand his point, but he forgets that vanilla is in fact the most popular flavor of ice cream in America. Indeed, the argument for vanilla was always the argument for Bayh. Lots of people like the more exciting flavors, but everyone likes vanilla. Being the least objectionable candidate to the most people is usually how candidates win in America. Such is the beauty — or curse — of the two party system.
