Below, Jonah has a post on Trump and Chamberlain. I would like to add that the wording of the two men is eerily close. Chamberlain said, “I believe it is peace for our time. . . . Go home and get a nice quiet sleep.” Trump said (tweeted), “There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea.” And then, “. . . sleep well tonight!”
I think that, at a minimum, leaders of democracies should avoid such language when dealing with despots, and reporting on deals with them. When you talk as Trump did, you invite comparisons to Munich. Indeed, you give such comparisons a gilded invitation, delivered on a pillow by a footman.
We can certainly hope for a better result on the Korean Peninsula than we had in Europe. Still, I would recommend sleeping with one eye open. Realism — knowledge of the past and the present — demands it.
