Benchmarks

A number of people have commented that Obama appears to have gotten the largest percentage of the popular vote of any Democrat since LBJ in 1964. But it’s remarkable enough that he appears to have gotten the largest percentage of any candidate from either party since 1988. Dick Morris and Eileen McGann attempt to undercut Obama’s victory by pointing to some ridiculous pre-election polls–”it’s worth noting that Obama hasn’t scored the knockout that many predicted”–but his actual achievement is impressive enough.

Obama has a shot at getting as many electoral votes as Clinton got in his two wins. In 1992 Clinton got 53 percent of the two-party vote and in 1996 he got 55 percent of it. If the present numbers hold up Obama will equal Clinton’s 1992 share.
