When You Feel the Bern, ‘Together’ Is How You Conduct Class Warfare

Bernie Sanders fans just love the ad below – an up-with-people ode to the things we can do together. On Vimeo alone it’s been viewed 2.7 million times, and it’s been widely-shared on YouTube. It’s a message of unity, right? Listen closely:

Sanders says (against the backdrop of stirring music and a roaring crowd):

Our job is not to divide. Our job is to bring people together. If we do not allow them to divide us up by race, by sexual orientation, by gender — by not allowing them to divide us up by whether or not we were born in America or whether we are immigrants –when we stand together as white and black and Hispanic and gay and straight and woman and man, when we stand together and demand that this country work for all of us rather than the few, we will transform America, and that is what this campaign is about is bringing people together. (Emphasis added.)

To the socialist, “together” is how one conducts class warfare. It’s us versus them — as he so clearly states. This message only feels unifying because he’s deliberately shunning the race/gender/sexuality identity politics that have been choking our culture for the past decade-plus. This is old-school “workers of the world unite” rhetoric but with a series of smiling, multicultural faces.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Democratic race will be seeing which form of leftist culture war triumphs. While Hillary will be forced to pay lip service to class, she’s circling her wagons around race and gender. Sanders will meet with Sharpton, but he’s got his socialist plan, and he’s sticking to it.

The march to the Bastille was no doubt intoxicating for the mob, but don’t let anyone tell you it was an act of unity.
