You may have seen this Roll Call piece earlier today, regarding the House GOP Conference outreach to Latino voters during the congressional recess. You can read the entire recess press kit here, with the memo on page 33.
After offering several suggestions for members courting Hispanic voters, the memo closes with these final thoughts:
• Talking about the economy is a unifying issue. It’s the number one issue among Hispanics.
• Taking the time to share your point of view and the reasons behind your voting record makes a huge
difference among your minority constituents.
• Making the effort to invite them to your district office or an appearance at their meetings will make them supporters.
It’s particularly interesting that there’s nothing here about immigration. Immigration tends to rank low among Hispanic voters’ priorities — except, perhaps, when a candidate makes it his big issue.
