Many of us at NR have taken a special interest in the race for Montana’s Public Service Commission District 1 seat. What, you weren’t following it closely? Well, we have an excuse: one of the candidates was Travis Kavulla, our former colleague. Happily, he prevailed. Congrats, Travis.

HELENA — Republican wunderkind and first-time candidate Travis Kavulla defeated former Democratic State Sen. Don Ryan in the race for the Public Service Commission District 1 seat.
As of midnight Tuesday Kavulla led Ryan by a margin of 64 percent to 36 percent with 98 percent of precincts reporting.
Kavulla lead Ryan in all 18 out of 19 counties in northcentral and northeastern Montana as of presstime, including by a 4,233-vote margin in historically Democratic Cascade County. Ryan’s only lead was in Roosevelt County, where he won by 17 votes. The Republican declared victory around 10 p.m. Tuesday.
