Bill Proposed to Reveal Abortion Surcharges in Obamacare

Representative Chris Smith (R., N.J.) has introduced the Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act in an effort to force insurance companies to make public which plans cover abortion or include a $1 monthly surcharge to pay for abortions. The bill would require full disclosure of all abortion coverage for each plan offered on the Obamacare health-insurance exchanges. Worried about the “great deal of disinformation about the Affordable Care Act,” representative Smith introduced this law with 70 co-sponsors.

The Charlotte Lozier Institute has repeatedly tried to determine how a consumer might know whether or not an insurance plan covers or provides money for abortion, and found that it was impossible or very difficult to obtain that information through the insurance-exchange websites or through contacting the private-plan administrators.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life organization the Susan B. Anthony List, praised the bill, saying, “the Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act addresses just one of the many clandestine abortion funding problems in Obamacare. Without this legislation, millions of Americans are likely to be unknowingly enrolled in health plans that include abortion coverage. Enrollees will not know they must pay an ‘abortion surcharge’ — that will go into an abortion slush fund – until it is too late.”
