Bipartisan Consensus: No U.S. Troops in Syria to Enforce Agreement

Republican representative Michael McCaul of Texas and Democratic representative Chris Van Hollen of Maryland sparred on Fox News Sunday over how much credit President Obama deserves for the new chemical-weapons pact regarding Syria.

But one thing they agreed on: U.S. troops should not be on the ground there to enforce the agreement.

“I would hope it would be mostly Russian forces on the ground. I think it’s going to be extremely difficult . . . going into a civil-war situation trying to remove and destroy chemical weapons,” McCaul said, adding that it would “hopefully [be] without any American troops being put on the ground.”

“We should have international inspectors on the ground — no Americans on the ground,” Van Hollen said.
