Deputy national-security adviser Tony Blinken said he did not speak clearly last Friday when he said that President Obama had neither the desire nor the intention to strike Syria without congressional authorization.

“I didn’t speak very artfully,” Blinken said. “The president, it’s clearly his desire and intent to secure the support of Congress for this action, but I don’t want to get into any hypotheticals over what will or will not happen after the vote.”

When pressed to clarify whether or not he was standing by the statement in the Friday interview with NPR, Blinken said that “there is no point in jumping ahead of where we are now.”
