Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama Spurns Insurance Extensions

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama announced yesterday that, despite President Obama’s “fix,”  it won’t reinstate policies that did not meet Obamacare’s minimum-coverage requirement.

The insurer justified its decision in a statement, saying that reinstating the policies “would create dual classes of policyholders and destabilize the state’s insurance market and the risk pools associated with these health plans.”

In October, Blue Cross sent 87,000 letters to individual policyholders notifying them that their policies had been canceled. These policyholders were given comparable policies that comported with Obamacare regulations; Blue Cross says no one lost coverage.
