One side effect of the border debate is removing yet another guardrail in our political debate, which is comparing your opponents to Nazis. This used to be a disreputable tack that you’d see on Twitter and among fringe commentators, but it went mainstream this week (besides the famous Michael Hayden example, Gabe Sherman published an anonymous quote calling Stephen Miller “Waffen SS”), and it’s unlikely the norm against it will return.
