Both Sides, Now

Christian Van Horn (Satan) and Michael Fabiano (Faust) in Robert Carsen’s production of Boito’s Mefistofele at the Metropolitan Opera (Karen Almond / Met Opera)

I have done a new Jaywalking, which includes a typical mixture: politics, foreign policy, Great American Names, etc. (One of the GANs this time is “Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.” The name belongs to a safety on the Washington Redskins.) (Speaking of names: They’re still the “Redskins,” right?) Well, what about music? I have some Callas this time. And “Amazing Grace” played on the erhu, a Chinese string instrument.

The podcast goes out with the great heavenly chorus from Mefistofele (Mephistopheles), by Boito. This opera contains both heavenly choruses and devilish ones. I am strictly heavenly on the podcast. But you know the expression “give the devil his due”? In that spirit, let me offer the Witches Sabbath from Mefistofele, in a production at the Teatro del Giglio in Lucca (Tuscany): here.

People love bipartisanship, or claim to. So …

P.S. For my review of the current Mefistofele at the Metropolitan Opera, go here.

P.P.S. The heading of this Corner post is a reference to a Joni Mitchell song, from 1967.
