Bread & Water is still a punishment used by the US Navy. During a Captain’s Mast, the Captain of the ship can order that you to be held in the brig, and put on bread & water. You get all the bread & water you want, but that’s all you get. And, there’s no guarantee that the bread is not green & slimy.
