You may not remember a wonderfully entertaining 1960s disaster flick called Crack In The World, starring Dana Andrews as a scientist who sets off an A-bomb in the earth’s crust to release geothermal energy. Trouble is, the bomb does too much damage. The result, as one of the film’s characters puts it: “Earthquakes! Tidal waves! Mass destruction on an apocalyptic scale!” One of my all-time favorite movie lines, by the way…
Well, along comes this report from Popular Science. Drilling for geothermal energy really could cause mass destruction on an apocalyptic scale!

It’s the first time any of those bad sci-fi movies from my childhood has turned out to be the literal truth! I’m thinking now we ought to go looking for that island where Mothra lives.
Me: Well, first of all of course I remember Crack in the World! It was on channel 11 every couple years throughout my childhood (or maybe it was channel 9).
Second, how can you leave out the film’s tagline? “Thank God it’s Only a Motion Picture!”
Third, the island Mothra is from — or at least where he is worshipped — was called “Infant Island.” The thing to be afraid of is if Infant Island is real, then Monster Island is real. And that would mean, among other things, baby Godzilla is real (who looked disturbingly like a shaved, unbloated Grimace from the old McDonald’s commercials, if you ask me).
Fourth, I just learned from Wikipedia that Grimace is an “anthropomorphic purple tastebud.” Who knew?
