Bring Back Boris?

With Liz Truss gone, and her party in shambles, is it time for the Conservative Party to admit its mistake and bring back Boris Johnson as prime minister? At first blush, that sounds a touch crazy, I’ll concede. But, really, why not? Boris was a little scandal-prone. Compared to the Tories’ current predicament, though, his premiership looks heavenly. Boris was a big spender, who believed in nothing much at all. But, as the Tories just made clear, they don’t actually want someone who believes in anything — let alone someone who believes in fiscal conservatism. What they want is someone who can win, and then keep the party away from ideological infighting.

Well, Boris can do that. Those big majorities the Conservatives currently enjoy — the only reason there has not been another general election in Britain — were achieved by Boris Johnson. Why not put him back into Downing Street, to serve as a sort of familiar, friendly caretaker, who, if he achieves nothing else besides, can prevent the British from having to make hard choices and keep the unkempt Labour Party out?
