Bringing Jollity

Americans live on “different planets,” people say — different planets when it comes to the news we consume and our understanding of the world. I duly begin my new Jaywalking with “Jupiter,” from Holst’s Planets.

Jupiter is “the Bringer of Jollity.” That is a very good thing to bring.

Elsewhere in the podcast, I have a snippet of John Gurney singing “Ol’ Man River,” in 1936. Why? Well, first, because it’s kind of neat. But second, because his son Dan, the racecar champion, recently died — and obits noted that the elder Gurney would sometimes sing the national anthem at races in which the younger Gurney was participating.

I end my podcast with some slick playing on the cello by a friend of mine, Brinton Smith. In between is discussion political, athletic, international, etc. Give it a whirl.
