On women’s sex-based rights, Boris Johnson recently said that “biological males” ought not to be allowed to compete in women’s sports. And that women’s hospitals, prisons, and changing rooms should be female-only.
His chancellor has taken a similar stand. Rishi Sunak has insisted that biology is “critically important” and expressed concerns that women’s rights are being “eroded” by trans extremism.
The health secretary, Sajid Javid, also demanded an urgent inquiry into children being given gender-transitioning hormone treatment on the NHS, which he worries is “failing children.”
The Conservative Party in Britain is politically liberal by American standards. It introduced gay marriage and most of its MPs support legal abortion. Nevertheless, it draws the line on transgenderism. The Labour Party, Britain’s progressive party, has gone in the other direction. Labour’s leader, Keir Starmer, has refused to answer whether a woman can have a penis. Which does the public prefer, I wonder?
