Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?

This month marks the 75th anniversary of the great anthem of the Depression by Jay Gorney and Yip Harburg, both lefties but they knew how to write. Please don’t make us the next verse:

Once I had a website, wrote a post

Brought the Kos out in zits

Once I had a website, now it’s toast

Brother, Can You Spare Two Bits?

Last night I heard the news that my pals at The Western Standard in Canada were closing up shop. If you think the media scene’s biased here, try spending three months up north or in Europe. And, if you think it can’t happen here, wait till they re-introduce the Fairness Doctrine and then move on to regulating the Internet. Alternative information networks take time to build and they need support.

All of us hate having to do the PBS thing and tout the free Bill Moyers snood with a $200 donation for a cheerless 20 minutes in front of silent phone banks before the fine quality programming resumes (the 1983 Peter, Paul and Mary reunion concert). But the sooner you chip in to NRO the sooner the fine quality programming will resume (the 1999 Jonah, Derb and JPod reunion concert).
