Calif. Insurance Company Admits Accidentally Posting Private Info of 24,500 Doctors Online Last Month

Typically, it’s consumers who are worried about privacy breaches under Obamacare. In California, however, doctors in Anthem Blue Cross’s network would be right to be concerned.

Anthem said yesterday that it accidentally posted Social Security or tax identification numbers for roughly 24,5000 California doctors last month.

The company, which is the state’s largest for-profit insurer, posted the information online in its provider directory for about 24 hours. It had been reworking its provider directory to accurately reflect changes in its network of doctors and hospitals under Obamacare.

The breach did not involve any patient information and Anthem has offered the doctors free credit monitoring and credit insurance.
