Californians Prevent the Federal Government from Dumping Illegal Immigrants in their Community

Hundreds of protesters blocked the passage of three buses carrying illegal immigrants into Murrieta, Calif., on Tuesday. The protesters waved American flags, chanted “USA!” and ultimately forced the buses to turn around before dumping the immigrants at the Murrieta Border Patrol Station, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. Roger Cotton told the Times he drove up from San Diego and arrived shortly after the buses were turned around. “I wanted to say that I as an American citizen do not approve of this human disaster that the government has created,” Cotton said. The street was closed to any further traffic, and local police patrolled the area.

Before the demonstration, Murrieta mayor Alan Long called on his town’s residents to contact their elected officials to protest the move. Long told Fox and Friends earlier this morning that his city will hold a town-hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. today to discuss potential solutions to the problem. “The concern is while originally they [federal government officials] told us 500 [illegal immigrants], [and] we just simply did not have the capacity to do that,” Long said. “That number is reduced to 140 every 72 hours with no end date.”

The buses carrying the 140 illegal immigrants, who crossed the border in Texas, ultimately arrived at a Border Patrol facility in San Diego County late Tuesday afternoon. Last week, residents of Escondido, a suburban San Diego town, protested an attempt by the Department of Health and Human Services to open a shelter for illegal immigrants in a neighborhood in their town. As the federal government moves the illegal immigrants north, towns alongside I-15 in California are rising up in opposition.
