Can the Democratic Party Ever Get Tough Again?

Former CIA director James Woolsey calls himself a “Scoop Jackson Democrat: ”willing to countenance liberal social programs, he insists on conservative defense and foreign policies. Is there an opening under Barack Obama, I ask Woolsey on today’s Uncommon Knowledge, for Woolsey, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, and any remaining Democrats who share their views to reclaim at least some portion of the Democratic Party?

I don’t know. I’ve always been able to understand dictators and terrorists better than the American electorate. But the Democratic Party has been around since Thomas Jefferson, and my great hope is that it will renew itself, providing a reasonable approach to national security. But whether it does or not, we have to try to get the country to do the right thing.
