Can’t Do

Numerous readers: “It’s nice to talk about deporting illegal immigrants, but how on earth would we do it? There are millions of them. Get real.”

When I was a kid, and the USA was a big country on the other side of an ocean, the thing we always heard about Uncle Sam was, that he was the can-do guy. Arsenal of Democracy? Give us a few weeks to tool up. Batlleships, carriers, and bombers for WW@? No problem. Fifty-year standoof with nuke-arked totalitarians? We’re on it. Man on the moon? Give us a decade for that one… OK, there you go. I love and cherish that image of can-do America.

But now I hear: “Patrol the southern border? Impossible! Deport ten million gatecrashers? How on earth could we do that? Get real!”

Call me a nostalgic old fuddy-duddy, but I so much prefer that first image.
