Pointing to programs like D.C.’s Opportunity Scholarship Program, House majority leader Eric Cantor stressed today that Republicans have to be serious about showing Americans how the GOP agenda involves assisting those struggling, not just paying down the national debt.
“I don’t think that Joseph Kelly cares one iota about rebranding the Republican or the Democratic party,” Cantor said on Meet the Press, referring to a D.C. dad whose four children had been able to attend safe schools thanks to the D.C. school-choice program. “I think what we care about and what he cares about is his kids,” the congressman explained.
“We’ve got to be talking about helping folks,” Cantor continued, mentioning that he had a twelve-year-old constituent named Katie who had been diagnosed with cancer as a one-year-old. “That is a parent’s nightmare, the worst nightmare. And the federal government has got a role in research and basic medical research trying to find cures for disease.”
“You’ve got so many millions of Americans who feel that they have become an afterthought,” Cantor concluded. “My purpose in saying this is [that] we have conservative principles that actually can work for their lives again. And that’s what we’re going to be about promoting.”
