Jay Carney refused to denounce Education secretary Arne Duncan’s comment that criticism of Common Core is coming from “white suburban moms” who dislike the program’s standards. The White House press secretary said he hadn’t seen Duncan’s full comments, but that the administration would agree if the secretary’s point was “we need to be honest with kids and parents about whether we’re providing them the skills” addressed in the program.
When asked if it was appropriate for Duncan to qualify and target a constituency by race, Carney again declined to touch on the matter, instead repeating that he hadn’t seen the comments in their context and that the administration was dedicated to making sure students get the skills they need.
