CBS Radio Runs an Inexcusably Misleading Description of the Chicago Torture

I’m sorry, but this is pathetic. Via Mediaite, here’s how CBS Radio described the horrific Chicago torture incident, where black attackers kidnapped a young white man, beat him, kicked him, cut him, and yelled, “F**k white people. F**k Donald Trump.”

The viral video of a beating and knife attack in Chicago suggests the assault had racial overtones. CBS’s Dean Reynolds tells us the victim is described as a mentally-challenged teenager.

In the video he is choked and repeatedly called the n-word. His clothes are slashed and he is terrorized with a knife. His alleged captors repeatedly reference Donald Trump. Police are holding four people in connection with the attack.

Yes, the attackers used the n-word, and yes the attackers “repeatedly reference” Trump, but no sentient listener would hear that report and think that black suspects attacked a white victim. And this is CBS, one of the big boys.

I know that news organizations are full of fallible people, and they will make mistakes. But the objection to much of the mainstream media isn’t so much that it makes mistakes, it’s that the “mistakes” are so darn predictable. Reporters are sometimes misleading or (more typically) hopelessly gullible when information or reports seem to support their pre-existing narratives.

This is beyond gullible, however. The report seems written to mislead. CBS should be ashamed.
