At the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing this morning, General Mattis, the highly regarded commander of CENTCOM, gave a stark analysis of the situation in Iran. According to the general, “2013 will be a year of reckoning on Iran” because sanctions are not working and Iran’s “nuclear industry continues.” Mattis acknowledged the possibility that sanctions could help turn the Iranian people against the regime and force it to end its nuclear program, but he advised that we must keep other options on the table.

He also warned that leaders of other Middle Eastern countries have told him that Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons will lead to a nuclear-arms race in the region.
