I’ve been trying for a couple of years now to get Cesar Chavez’ birthday recognized as National Border Control Day. As I explained in these pages, Chavez was a fierce opponent of illegal immigration and a border-defending Minuteman avant la lettre.
Well, it’s starting to break through. NBC News posted a story this morning. The story quotes Chavez’s fellow farmworker activist Dolores Huerta saying the holiday is “a mean thing to do” – in other words, that she would prefer to send Chavez’s pro-border activism down the memory hole.
Here’s the artwork for this year’s commemoration:
Next year would have been Chavez’s 90th birthday, so a bigger celebration will be warranted.
