The Corner

Change

A few nights ago, I was in the grocery store, late. And I was marching to the cash register when a lady cut me off. She walked slowly, slowly in front of me. I kind of trudged. She was a typical West Side lady – trust me on this. And, to add to my irritation, she boasted a big Obama button on her jacket: It showed an image of The One (are you allowed to show his image?) and it said, “Change is coming to America.” I thought, “It sure is, lady, it sure is.” (I know the election’s not sewn up, I’m just being a little rhetorical.) Later, I read Amir Taheri’s account of his conversation with Jesse Jackson (here). Said Jackson, “Obama is about change. And the change that Obama promises is not limited to what we do in America itself. It is a change of the way America looks at the world and its place in it.” You are right, Rev, you are right. If Obama gets in: There will be change indeed, and nothing to cheer about – not for America, not for the world.
