Renowned scholar Chris DeMuth has resigned from the Heritage Foundation.

DeMuth, a lawyer and public policy expert, has spent decades in the conservative movement, having served most notably as president of the American Enterprise Institute from 1986 to 2008. He joined Heritage amid much fanfare in 2023 as a distinguished fellow at the B. Kenneth Simon Center for American Studies.

While there has been no official announcement of his departure, his Heritage staff page was updated on Tuesday to say, “This person is no longer a staff member at The Heritage Foundation.” He confirmed via text message to National Review that he had resigned.

No official reason was given for his departure, but this development comes in the wake of a controversial video in which Heritage President Kevin Roberts defended his friend Tucker Carlson for conducting a softball interview with white supremacist Nick Fuentes.

“Chris DeMuth is a great man and a patriot,” a Heritage spokesman said in a statement to National Review. “He has been an invaluable figure in the conservative movement for decades. We are thankful for his years of service at Heritage and elsewhere. We wish him the best.”
