Speaking of sociologically interesting, here are the first three emails in response to my post below . The first is from my longtime liberal e-friend:
Subject: You’re on to it, of course
Good to see you sticking to your intuition that the regent law school types may be brilliant but probably aren’t.
In theory, is it a high crime or misdemeanor to stock your administration with such incompetent flunkies that the government stops working as it should?
The second from a reader who usually beats me up for being too hard on Bush:
Jonah, I am a conservative, homeschooling father, somewhere in-between a
fundamentalist and charismatic. I believe that this country was founded
largely on Judeo-Christian principles and values. I want more Christians in
government. Heck, I want more Theists in government.
Next month my wife and I, as we do every year, will be going to the
Arlington (Texas) Annual Homeschool Book Fair, where we will rub shoulders
with people you would love and people who would scare the pants off you.
It is because of these latter, well-meaning folks that Krugman’s column
actually seemed credible to me. People who want to turn the U.S. into a
theocracy are real and they are reproducing (uh, both ways). They publish,
they debate, they convince, they have marched into Alabama in support of the
Mad Hatter Judge Moore.
There is both slander and truth, unfortunately, in accounts from the Left
regarding this movement.
They need to be dealt with or all of us are going to be painted with their
brush.
And the third from an ideologically indeterminate regular reader:
Call me an elitist, but if we are going to have devout christians in the Justice department, I would prefer they went to Chicago or Stanford Law. I think there is something to be said about high LSAT scores and going to one of the best schools in the country. And I have never bought the canard that there are no conservatives at the best law schools. Robert, Alito, Scalia? Bill Maher had a great point on his show the other night. The lawyer Monica Goodling hired went to a real law school. That says a law school.
