Christie Won’t Take Immigration Stance Unless He Runs in 2016

Governor Chris Christie told reporters in Mexico to “move on” from asking him about his stance in the ongoing immigration debate because he’s waiting until a potential 2016 bid to tackle the issue.

“Until that time, I have no role in the immigration debate, except for how it may affect the individual citizens of New Jersey, which I’ll deal with as governor,” he told reporters in Mexico City on Thursday. “But I won’t have anything to say on immigration unless and until I become a candidate for president of the United States.”

If he does opt to run for the Republican nomination, Christie assured reporters that he “will articulate a full position” on immigration. CNN notes that Christie has refrained from discussing immigration in the past, including as recently as this summer, but Christie did discuss the issue with Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto during his three-day trade trip to the country.
