Chuck Hagel: Friend of the Vet

One of the talking points in Chuck Hagel’s favor we’re hearing a lot these days is how supportive he is of veterans. President Obama touted it in his nomination statement yesterday. That’s good. I like supporting veterans. And all things being equal, I think the secretary of defense should support and respect veterans. But is that his job? I thought there was a cabinet agency dedicated to veterans already: the Department of Veterans Affairs. Isn’t the defense secretary’s job to prepare for, deter, and/or if necessary, win wars? Does anyone oppose Hagel as the secretary of veterans affairs?
