The media is going bonkers over the way (white) women are turning away from the Democratic ticket and closing the gender gap tighter than we have seen it since pre-Reagan times. That vindicates everyone who says that Sarah Palin was put on the ticket to attract female voters. But was that the sole intent of the McCain campaign? In my NRO piece today, “Babe Magnet or Class Act,” I argue that they chose her to attract white working class voters — in the swing states in particular — as well. Remember, to win in the electoral college, McCain needs to hold Ohio and Florida, and pick up a state or two. Michigan and Pennsylvania have a lot of those Reagan Democrats who voted for Hillary and are uncomfortable with Obama. It’s not clear that Joe Biden is the man to win them back. So maybe Palin is the ultimate two’fer: attractive on the basis of sex and class. And the hell with the policy wonk vote…
