Hillary Clinton says she supports comprehensive immigration reform, but she seemed to take a harder line on children who recently arrived in the U.S. illegally than many Democrats have. Arguing increasing violence in Central America is the cause for the sudden surge in child immigrants, Clinton said the children and their families aren’t entitled to stay in the U.S.

“It may be safer, but that’s not the answer,” she said during CNN’s town-hall event on Tuesday. “They should be sent back as soon as it can be determined who are responsible adults in their families are.”

Clinton offered some solutions to the issue, including enhanced border security and providing emergency services to the troubled nations. Allowing the children to stay, and ultimately be used to bring their families over, poses significant problems to the rule of law, she said.

“We have to send a clear message that just because your child gets across the border that doesn’t mean that child gets to stay,” she continued. “We don’t want to send a message that is contrary to our laws or will encourage more children to make that dangerous journey.”
