CNN’s Brooke Baldwin: Returning Vets to Blame for Baltimore Riots?

So, this happened:

That’s CNN’s Brooke Baldwin actually saying — in the midst of a softball interview with Democrat Elijah Cummins – “I love our nation’s veterans, but some of them are coming back from war, they don’t know the communities, and they are ready to do battle.” I’m not sure what’s worse, the sentiment itself or the plaintive way she stated it — as if she’s telling a sad, painful truth about a family member.

Baldwin certainly has an odd definition of “love.” In general, people don’t spread allegations of out-of-control violent behavior about anyone, much less people they love. And they especially don’t do so on the basis that they just heard someone say stuff. Here’s Baldwin’s feeble attempt at a defense:

I don’t want to spend much more time on this nonsense, but I’ve been downrange, and there is not one man that I served with who came home “ready to do battle.” In fact, when they were in actual battles, they exercised discipline and self-restraint she can scarcely comprehend — at great and deadly risk to themselves. Baltimore would do well to have those men on its police force.
