In a discussion about the Department of Justice report released last week on the Ferguson police department, George Stephanopoulos asked former secretary of state Colin Powell for his views about the Republican party and race. “How about your own party’s experience with race?” he asked on This Week Sunday. “A couple of years back, you spoke out about the dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the Republican party on race. Is that what you still see?”

“I still see it,” Powell replied. “I still see it in the Republican party, and I still see it in other parts of our country.”

“You don’t have to be Republican to be touched by this dark vein,” Powell added. “America is still going through this transformation from where we were just 50 or 60 years ago.”

In his previous comments in 2013, Powell explained that he meant by a “dark vein of intolerance” that some people in the Republican party “still sort of look down on minorities.”
