The Corner

Coming this Friday on NROriginals

The December 18, 1962 edition of Bill Buckley’s brassy fortnightly brimmed with juicy journalism — royal even! — on De Gaulle and more. Former Archduke Otto von Habsburg’s essay defended the intentions of Monsieur Le President against conservative critics: De Gaulle, OVH wrote, sought to counter the Communist threat by forging a united, nuclear-armed Europe strong enough to shape its own destiny (in ‘62 NR was giving its readers an EU preview). Next up, James Burnham provided an unvarnished look at de Gaulle in the wake of the controversial decision to grant Algeria independence. We round out the trio of pieces with an NR editorial, “Blow the Man Down,” on the emerging Draft Goldwater movement — with a dig or two at Nelson Rockefeller, naturally.

NROriginals — and its siblings, Morning Jolt, The Goldberg File, and NRO Digest — are all free and worth your while. Sign up here.
