This thing has got to have legs:

Update: From a reader:

Lately, I seem to send you nothing but nattering nanny emails. Maybe it’s something in the water?

I don’t consider myself squeamish, but I found the “Socialism” poster literally stomach turning. I don’t see any linkage between Obama and the Joker, or socialism and the Joker. And no image of a black man in white face can avoid scrutiny, or controversy. And I don’t see why the placement of these things is in any way newsworthy. So I just don’t see the point of the post, or of conservative propagation of the image — and I do see the possibility of distraction and division.

The guy is killing himself with health care reform, and spending, and PC mis-steps like the Gates stuff. Why get in his way?

I’m more sympathetic to this than my initial post might suggest. I think the image is striking, though not stomach turning. I posted it because, I really do think it has legs (I’ve received email about it from every ideological direction). I’m not sure I understand its intended meaning myself, but I think the “racist white-face” interpretation — which we’ll hear a lot of, I’m sure — isn’t all that persuasive. That seems more like an attempt to find a conventional interpretation of a very unconventional and confusing image. But maybe I’m wrong.
